Harrier Facelift Vs Fortuner Drag Race [Video]

Toyota Fortuner is one of the most popular SUVs in India. With Ford exiting the country, there is no real competition for the Fortuner except for the MG Gloster. In the current market situation, most of the SUVs are priced in the range of Rs. 20 lakhs to Rs. 30 lakhs. Today, we will compare the iconic Fortuner with the much cheaper Tata Harrier in a drag race. The video, which compares both SUVs in terms of their performance, was uploaded by Charlie Vlogs on YouTube.

The Fortuner shown in the video is a 2017 diesel model, while the Harrier is the facelifted 2023 version of the SUV. This is not just a regular Harrier; it is the Harrier dark edition, which features an all-black theme.

Before diving into the details of the drag race, let’s first understand the details and power figures of both SUVs. The Toyota Fortune has two engine options: a 2.7-litre petrol engine producing 164 HP/245 Nm of torque and a 2.8-litre diesel engine producing 202 HP/500 Nm of torque. The petrol engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, while the diesel engine comes with two transmission options: a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic.

It is important to note that the car shown in the video is the pre-facelift diesel version (2016-2021) of the Toyota Fortuner, which was powered by a 2.8-litre engine producing 174 HP and 450 Nm of torque. On the other hand, the Tata Harrier does not offer a petrol engine. It is powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine that produces 170 hp and 350 Nm of torque. This engine option is mated to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The Fortuner offers 4×4 capabilities in some diesel variants, while the Harrier does not offer 4×4 or an AWD system. The host mentions that both SUVs are 4×2 automatic versions. Weight is another major factor in drag races. The Fortuner weighs 2180 kg, while the Tata Harrier weighs 1825 kg.

Now, let’s start with the race. Drag races are highly dependent on the racing conditions. For the first race, traction is kept off; both cars are in sports mode with the AC off and two occupants. The race starts with the Fortuner in the lead. The Tata Harrier fails to keep up with the Fortuner, and the Fortuner wins with a significant difference.

The second race is performed with the same conditions, but this time around, the Tata Harrier takes the lead for a second. Still, it is overtaken by the Fortuner, which again wins the race with a considerable distance.

In the third race, the drivers are changed to make the competition fair. Sports mode is turned off only in the Fortuner, and all other conditions are the same. The race starts with the Harrier in the lead, but similar to the second race, the Fortuner overtakes the Harrier. However, this race was stopped as a bike came in front of the Fortuner.

Round four was performed with the same conditions as round three. In this round, the Fortuner starts with the lead but stops mid-way due to an oncoming bike. Concluding the video, we can say that both the cars are of completely different segments, and there is a huge difference in their power figures. The Tata Harrier is a great value-for-money car and comes loaded with features, which is not the case with the Fortuner.
