Can you believe we’re all grown up? Hyperallergic celebrated its fifteenth birthday at The Red Pavilion on Wednesday night and it was an affair to remember. More than 150 friends, writers, and members joined us at the Asian neo-noir nightclub in Bushwick for dancing to beats by DJ Pillow Princess, mezzes by the iconic Brooklyn restaurant Tanoreen, and a very special show that told the history of Hyperallergic through drag, complete with an aerial spectacular to kick things off.
After a touching speech by co-founders Hrag Vartanian and Veken Gueyikian, our glorious emcee Zac Thompson, who curated and produced the show, took us through 15 years of Hyperallergic. Huge thanks to CoCo, DJ Pillow Princess, Felicia Oh, Amygdala, Kekoa Is, DiDi Opulence, Kanika, and Junior Mintt, who got creative with mysterious prompts like “no paywall” and “independent journalism” and turned out stunning performances that took us from the graveyard to outer space. We howled at the moon and raised the roof for revolution — all while feeling pretty in pink.
If you couldn’t make it IRL, join the celebration online with party photos by Sidewalkkilla and Saint Piñero. We hope to see you next time!
