The “Harry Potter” legacy includes Professor Severus Snape as portrayed by Alan Rickman.
The actor revealed new diary entries that he had kept and shared with The Guardian. The infamous Snape was seldom there, as Rickman wanted to get out of his role.
After a long battle with cancer, Rickman died in 2016.
Rickman wrote in an excerpt from December 4, 2002, that he was “talking to [agent] Paul Lyon Maris about HP exit. He believes it will happen.” We are back in the project collision zone. We will not be repeating HP. They don’t want it to be heard.”
Rickman refers to the Harry Potter franchise in his writing of “HP”.
Rickman would have already filmed two of the first installments of the movie series based on the J.K. Rowling books at this time.
Rickman wrote a contrasting entry on January 5, 2006. He said, “Finally! HP 5!” The sensation is neither positive nor negative. The argument that wins is “See it through.” It’s your story.
More excerpts were shared with Guardian. They span over a decade and Rickman writes about the antics he did on “Harry Potter,” the celebrities he met, the actors he had the privilege of working with, and one bold comment about Daniel Radcliffe, the star actor.
Rickman, May 2, 2003: “I still don’t believe he’s an actor, but he will undoubtedly produce/direct,” Rickman wrote.
He also had a harsh opinion about the other “Harry Potter”, writing, in an entry dated July 30, 2003: “These kids need to be directed.” They don’t know how to speak and Emma Watson’s diction can sometimes be like that of Albania.
Rickman, who starred with Liam Neeson in “Love Actually”, also wrote about the Hollywood elite that he met.
Natasha Richardson was Rickman’s wife and Rickman worked together on “Blow Dry.” She hosted a party that Neeson attended with Meryl Steep.
He wrote about the occasion: “Liam [Neeson] and Natasha [Richardson], his wife.” It took two hours to drive upstate to their beautiful house. There was dinner with John [Benjamin] Hickey and Jennifer [Carpenter] of The Crucible plus Meryl, as in Streep. It turns out that they are both fun and gossipy. It’s not easy – Meryl Streep is the only one who looks like Meryl. You can’t lose the stare.
Rickman recounts his experience of being invited to Sting’s Christmas party. He was allowed to speak to Elton John and David Furnish about Safe [Sponsored Art for Education, Kenyan charity]” and to get their support.
Another notable anecdote is that Rickman met Gwyneth Paltrow, whom Rickman called “more beautiful on screen,” and a comment about Nicole Kidman arriving late for something. He also said that Tobey Maguire and Tobey were late for something.
He also mentioned meeting Charles III, the current King of England, and Queen Consort Camilla as well as former President Bill Clinton.
Rickman’s book, “Madly, Deeply”: The Diaries Of Alan Rickman, is available on Oct. 18.
