Skoda’s Low Cost Electric SUV For India: What It Could Look Like

The Indian electric vehicle market is growing very rapidly, and to bank on this growing demand, the Czech automaker Skoda is gearing up to unveil a low-cost EV in the country. It has been reported that this much-anticipated affordable electric SUV will be tailored specifically for India and will be produced in India. Recently, a rendering of this upcoming sub-four-meter electric SUV has been shared online, giving us a look at what can be expected from this forthcoming SUV.

This rendering has come courtesy of Autonet.hr. It can be noted that this all-electric SUV will be smaller than the compact SUV Kushaq currently on sale in the Indian market. This particular rendering shows a closed-off front grille, sleek LED headlights with L-shaped LED DRLs, and a simple yet aggressive bumper with blacked-out lower portion. The side profile can be seen with chunky black claddings and diamond-cut alloy wheels. The rendering does not show the rear or the interior of this forthcoming SUV. Most likely, this is not a final design for this EV SUV.

Which platform will this affordable EV SUV use?

As per the reports, the forthcoming affordable electric SUV from Skoda will utilize the same MEB Entry platform that its parent company, the Volkswagen Group, utilizes. This platform has been designed to produce affordable electric cars and will be the perfect platform for the Czech carmaker to quickly produce this SUV. At the moment, the exact powertrain specifications for this all-electric sub-four-meter SUV have not been revealed. However, most likely, it could offer a similar driving range as the Tata Nexon EV. It has been reported that this EV SUV could be launched in the price range of €20,000, which translates to around Rs 17.84 lakh. However, it could also go down to as low as Rs 13 lakh according to some sources.

Skoda’s future electric plans

During an interview recently, Skoda CEO Klaus Zellmer shed light on the plans of the brand on the electric front. It was stated that the company is currently focusing on battery cost reduction and localization. He stated that Skoda aims to strike a balance between affordability and performance. Elaborating on the plans of Skoda’s India strategy, it was revealed that the India 2.0 plan will take the center stage, with a strong emphasis on cracking the price-sensitive, mass-market segment.
