The country’s largest SUV manufacturer, Mahindra, has once again come under the spotlight. This is because its mid-size SUV Bolero Neo received disappointing results in the Global NCAP crash test. So, in response to this recent crash test result, the company has shared its official statement. Mahindra, in its statement, has acknowledged the findings and outlined its commitment to vehicle safety.
Official Statement from Mahindra
In its official statement, Mahindra stated, “The Bolero Neo has always complied with safety regulations that have been introduced over time and continues to be fully compliant with the latest Indian safety standards. As we are constantly innovating and improving our vehicles to exceed safety regulations, we want to assure our customers and stakeholders that Mahindra has significantly enhanced safety features in all our recent launches.”
Mahindra added, “Models like the Thar, XUV700, XUV300, and Scorpio-N have been recognized with high safety ratings of 4 and 5 stars by the Global NCAP, reflecting our ongoing commitment to safety.”
Bolero Neo’s Crash Test Results
For those who may not be aware of the exact scores of the Mahindra Bolero Neo, the SUV, following its crash tests by Global NCAP, received an appalling 1-star safety rating. According to the Global NCAP evaluation, the Bolero Neo demonstrated subpar performance in various key areas, including adult occupancy protection, child occupant safety, and structural integrity. Specifically, the SUV exhibited low protection levels for adult occupants. It was stated that it has an unstable body structure and inadequate safety features such as airbags and seat belt reminders.
The Mahindra Bolero Neo only managed to score 20.26 points out of 34 in the adult occupancy protection test. Additionally, the body or structure of the Mahindra Neo was reported as unstable. Global NCAP also added that the footwell area was also unstable.
Apart from this, the Mahindra Bolero Neo scored only 12.71 points out of 49. This particular score highlights that the vehicle is extremely unsafe for child occupants.
Global NCAP also mentioned that Bolero Neo also misses out on a number of safety features. These include three-point seat belts for all passengers, a passenger airbag switch, and only one child restraint system (CRS).
According to the authorities, one of the contributing factors to its low safety score was its side-facing seats for the third row. Generally, these types of seats are not considered safe for passengers.
Mahindra’s Safety Track Record: A Mixed Bag
While the Bolero Neo’s performance in the Global NCAP crash test raises concerns, we have to keep in mind Mahindra’s overall safety track record. The company’s other models, including the XUV300, Thar, XUV700, and Scorpio-N, have received commendable safety ratings.
A number of these models have even achieved 4 or 5-star ratings in Global NCAP assessments. Most likely, the Bolero Neo’s disappointing results show the need for continuous improvement from the brand.
Just a few days ago, the company also launched the Bolero Neo+ 9-seater in the country at Rs 11.39 lakh. This particular model is being offered with a number of safety features, including ABS with EBD, dual airbags, ISOFIX child seats, engine immobilizer, and automatic door locks.
