Kia’s Sonet, a popular player in the sub-4 meter compact SUV segment, is gearing up to broaden its appeal with the introduction of two fresh variants: the HTE (O) and HTK (O). This strategic move by Kia India aims to target and cater to the needs of a wider audience while continuing to increase its sales figures.
The main highlight of these new variants is the addition of an electrically adjustable sunroof, a feature previously reserved for higher trims only. With this, customers can experience a sunroof without having to buy the higher model and breaking the bank.
Alongside the sunroof, the HTK (O) variant will come equipped with additional features, such as LED-connected tail lamps, automatic climate control, and a rear defogger. These features add a touch of sophistication and convenience to the overall experience of the car.
Currently, the HTE and HTK trims serve as the entry points to the Sonet lineup, priced at Rs. 7.99 lakhs and Rs. 8.79 lakhs (ex-showroom), respectively. With the addition of the sunroof and other upgrades, it’s expected that the pricing of these new variants will go up a bit.
Kia’s decision to introduce these feature-rich entry-level variants underscores its commitment to attracting a broader customer base. By offering more value at lower price points, the brand aims to carve out a larger slice of the compact SUV market share.
Under the hood, the Sonet offers a diverse range of engine options to cater to various preferences. A total of three engine options are offered. For people with fuel efficiency as the priority, the 1.2-liter naturally aspirated Kappa petrol engine delivers 83 horsepower and 115 Nm of torque, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission.
For people who prioritize performance, the 1.0-litre T-GDi turbocharged petrol engine pumps 118 horsepower and 172 Nm of torque. This engine comes mated with either a 6-speed intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) or a 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) for a smooth automatic experience. No manual transmission is available with this engine option.
For the diesel heads, the 1.5-liter CRDi turbodiesel option churning out a massive 116 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque is also offered. This engine is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, a 6-speed automatic transmission, or the 6-speed iMT.
Depending on the engine you choose, the Sonet can deliver fuel efficiency figures ranging from 17 kmpl to 24 kmpl. The Sonet boasts a head-turning design with a bold tiger-nose grille, sleek LED headlights, and muscular body lines. Along with the regular Sonet, Kia offers the car in GT Line and X-Line trims, which have their own distinctive cosmetic additions.
The car comes equipped with six airbags, ABS with EBD, and traction control as standard. Higher trims offer additional safety features like lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a 360-degree surround view camera.
Rivaling against players such as the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, and Mahindra XUV300, the Sonet faces stiff competition. This competition is going to increase even further as Skoda plans to launch their sub-4m SUV in India. This SUV is most likely to be launched in 2025.
