Jason Momoa to Play Lobo in ‘Supergirl’ Movie

It’s been a while since our last comics digest, huh? Here are some of the biggest headlines from the past month!

News from DC and Marvel

  • Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has found its directors, if not a release date.
  • Aquaman will be playing Lobo in the 2026 film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
  • I’m totally sure we don’t need it, but in case anyone forgot, here’s legendary X-Men writer Chris Claremont reminding us how immigrants and the immigrant experience are inseparable from superhero comics.
  • The first teaser trailer for James Gunn’s Superman movie dropped, featuring the cutest Krypto, Guy Gardner’s hideous bowl cut (that’s a compliment), and definitely not me crying.
  • Speaking of trailers, we also got our first look at Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, about what is quite possibly the dorkiest Peter Parker in history.

News from the Wider Comics World

  • One more teaser, this time for Netflix’s Asterix & Obelix: The Big Fight. While I am not qualified to offer an opinion on its faithfulness to the source material, it looks pretty fun!
  • Two iconic comic strip characters entered the public domain on January 1, 2025: the earliest appearances of Popeye and Tintin are yours to do with as you please. (*Sigh* Yes, a shlocky Popeye-themed horror flick is already in the works, so maybe do something more creative than that.) You can also legally draw Mickey Mouse with his gloves on, as that character iteration is now in the public domain, too.
  • Fans of Naruto and/or music may be interested in Naruto: The Symphonic Experience, a two-hour concert honoring the soundtrack from the classic anime.
  • Smithsonian Magazine published a retrospective about Peanuts, which, despite ending its long run a quarter of a century ago (!!), remains vastly popular and beloved.
