Deep Dive Into The Acti.EV Platform That The Tata Punch.EV Sits On

Over the last few years, Tata Motors has taken the top spot on the list of electric automakers in the country. However, up until the launch of the new Tata Punch.ev, all of the vehicles were built on ICE platforms that were modified to accommodate EV drivetrains. But now the company has made a shift to its all-new Acti.ev architecture. This new pure EV platform has been built specifically for the upcoming Tata electric cars, and the new Tata Punch.ev is the first car in the lineup to get the Acti.ev architecture. If you want to know all of the details about this new platform, then you have come to the right place.

The Tata Punch.ev, which is the brand’s newest electric offering, was launched on January 17th. It has been launched at a starting price of Rs 10.99 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs 14.49 lakh. As mentioned above, unlike conventional ICE-derived EVs, the Punch.ev is built from the ground up on Tata Motors’ Gen-2 EV architecture. This new platform has been dubbed ‘Acti.ev’ and it is an electric vehicle-specific platform created by Tata Motors on which more new models from the brand will be based.

What’s special about the Punch.ev with Acti.ev platform?

One of the most notable features of the Tata Punch.ev and its new Acti.ev platform is that it features a massively reworked monocoque. The company has made critical changes to the floor pan. According to Tata Motors, they have eliminated the rear hump present in the ICE version of the Tata Punch. This not only enhances cabin space but also allows for the integration of an orthogonal battery pack underneath the floor.

Anand Kulkarni, Chief Product Officer at Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM), has emphasized that the platform offers adaptability to support multiple drivetrain configurations. These configurations include front-wheel, rear-wheel, and all-wheel drive. Additionally, the company has also taken extensive measures to reinforce Punch.ev’s monocoque. The new EV micro-SUV offers integration of ultra-high-strength steel (UHSS) in key areas, such as the door sills, and enhances torsional rigidity by 30%, while simultaneously reducing weight by up to 15%.

In terms of battery technology, the Punch.ev utilizes an orthogonal-shaped battery pack housing lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) chemistry cells. This innovative design improves packaging efficiency by 10%, which has enabled Tata Motors to offer two battery pack options—a standard 25 kWh unit with a range of 315 km and a long-range 35 kWh pack offering a range of 421 km.

Tata Motors currently offers the new Punch.ev with a range of charging options. Both standard and long-range variants support up to 50 kW DC fast charging, enabling fast charging from 10 to 80 percent in less than an hour. Additionally, the Punch.ev is offered with a 3.3kW AC wall-box charger as standard, with the option of a 7.2kW AC fast charger for faster recharging.

All of these new upcoming EV cars from the brand will be based on the new Acti.ev platform. The list of these vehicles includes the Curvv EV, Altroz EV, Harrier EV, and the Sierra EV. The Curvv and Altroz EV will boast similar powertrain specifications as the Punch.ev.
