The Champions League quarter-finals have drawn to a close with both English clubs suffering a nightmare evening.

Manchester City’s dreams of the ‘Double Treble’ were shattered after a dramatic penalty shoot-out loss to Real Madrid.

Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic both missed from the spot as City were beaten 4-3 on penalties after their pulsating quarter-final tie ended 4-4 on aggregate.

Arsenal’s hopes were snuffed out as Joshua Kimmich’s header was enough to take Bayern Munich into the semi-finals.

After an enthralling 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium last week, this tie was finely poised but it was the hosts who progressed as Kimmich headed home in the second half to seal the win for Bayern.

In Tuesday’s quarter-finals, Kylian Mbappé struck twice as Paris St Germain capitalised on the dismissal of Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo to qualify for the semi-finals with a 4-1 win in the second leg.

While Borussia Dortmund went 2-0 up through Julian Brandt and Ian Maatsen before a Mats Hummels own goal and Angel Correa’s strike levelled the score.

Atletico Madrid were in the driving seat but the hosts responded superbly with Niclas Fullkrug and Marcel Sabitzer scoring to ignite celebrations in Dortmund.

The European Cup finale returns to the famous venue for a record eighth time, and the third in the Champions League era following the 2011 and 2013 finals.
