Jimmies softball swept by North Dakota on the road

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — The University of Jamestown could not overcome a poor third inning in a 3-1 loss to the University of North Dakota on Wednesday, April 9, at the Fighting Hawks’ Albrecht Field.

The Jimmies opened the scoring in the first inning when Kayla Quintanilla hit a single to left to make it 1-0. The Fighting Hawks responded with a three run bottom of the third when Makenna Alexander hit a two-run double and then came around to score on a single two batters later to take a 3-1 lead.

The Jimmies had a chance to fight back into the game in the top of the fourth when they loaded the bases for Natalie Draper who then had a 3-1 count but she grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the frame. The Fighting Hawks responded in the bottom of the fourth with a bases loaded situation of their own but a strikeout swinging ended the threat.

On the mound, the Jimmies’ Hope Ransome went five innings giving up three runs on seven hits while striking four and walking two. She was relieved by Maddie Hairgrove who went one perfect inning striking out one hitter. The Fighting Hawks’ Jackie Albrecht went six innings giving up one run on five hits while striking out five hitters and walking two. The senior gave way to the Hawks’ Makaela Carr who pitched a perfect inning of her own while striking out one hitter.

Jimmies shutout in game two:

The Jimmies failed to find the scoreboard in a 3-0 loss to the Fighting Hawks in the second game of the doubleheader between the two teams.

The Jimmies had a chance to get off to a fast start in the first inning when the second hitter of the game, Lauren Weigel hit a triple with one out but two consecutive pop-outs on the infield ended the frame.

The Hawks (21-18) opened the scoring in the fourth inning when Hailey Bethune hit a single to score a run and push her team in front 1-0. The Hawks added one more in the fourth to go up 2-0 before a Katelyn Neumayer single in the fifth scored a run and pushed the hosts in front 3-0.

Despite the deficit, the Jimmies (24-11) once again had another chance to fight back in the seventh when they had runners on the corners, but this time two strikeouts ended the game.

The Jimmies are back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, when they go to Valley City State University.
