Learning Fractions Using Food

Math and fractions isn’t always easy to learn. I remember struggling with fractions when I was a kid…many years ago. But I was never taught with visuals. Using lunch to teach fractions is not only fun and tasty, but it gives your child a visual so they can see the fractions.

And the best part is, you can use a number of foods to teach the basics of fractions like 1/8, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, and 1.

Math Fractions And Their Difficulty

Learn Fractions using lunch- Math fractions at lunch make learning fun for kids- child eating a sandwich

It is confusing for kids to understand that 1/3 is larger than 1/4. The number 4 is greater than 3. It makes sense why this would be really hard for them to “get”. So after an especially frustrating math lesson with our first grader, we decided to take a break for lunch – the menu was sandwiches and apples. It is a perfect lunch for fractions.

Like I said, using visuals will show them why and how 1/3 is bigger than 1/4. It’s perfect!

How To Learn Fractions At Lunch Time

Here are just a few of the ways we learned with our sandwiches:

  • Match the sandwich pieces to the fraction cards (I had 1/3, 2/4, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8th written on cards for the kids).
  • Sort the sandwich pieces by size, smallest piece to the largest piece.
  • Mix up the fraction cards and randomly draw a card.   Put that sandwich piece on “your” plate.
  • Count the number of pieces, then try and recreate a whole sandwich from your parts.
  • Eat and enjoy!

Our Experience Learning Fractions With Lunch

As a homeschooling family, we love to incorporate learning into our daily activities, even math fractions. Today, that meant we got to learn about fractions at lunch time. Kids Activities Blog hopes that you and your child can have some fun learning with food too.

We made their favorite sandwiches: Banana Splits (peanut butter, sliced banana & chocolate chips). I wanted the kids to eat more than normal – This was a special occasion 🙂 We cut the sandwiches into a variety of fractions. After the sandwiches were finished we enjoyed repeating our lesson with apples. I think they enjoyed lunch as much as I did!
